Extensions and stays
What is an Extension of Stay?
It is the authorization from the National Migration Institute for the extension of the time of stay granted to a non-resident foreigner upon entering the country.
Who can extend?
Under the law, any non-resident foreigner may request an extension of the authorized stay up to a total of 120 (one hundred and twenty) days in the territory of the countries of the CA-4 region (Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua). Likewise, all foreigners who have submitted a Special Permit for Stay or Residence application to the National Migration Institute or to the Secretariat of Human Rights, Justice, Government and Decentralization are required to extend their stay for the time necessary to obtain a resolution to the application and the respective registration in the National Registry of Foreigners.
Steps:
1.-Go to any internal control office of the National Migration Institute.
2.-Submit application for Extension of Stay and valid passport.
3.-Facilitate legal migration flows.
4.-Make the payment through a receipt from the General Treasury of the Republic (TGR) for an amount in national currency equivalent to USD$20.00 for each extended month.
5.-The extension of time will be printed on the passport.
After 120 days of stay in Honduras (or in the CA-4 region), you can:
1.-Request authorization to remain in the country under a migratory category, and submit through a legal representative a Request for Special Permit to Stay to the National Migration Institute.
2.-Request authorization to remain in the country under immigration status, and submit a Residence Application through a legal representative to the Secretariat of Human Rights, Justice, Government and Decentralization.
3.-Leave the CA-4 region.
Avoid incurring fines for overstaying. Before the time granted expires, go to the offices of the National Migration Institute to process the extension. Overstaying is grounds for deportation.
